DISCIPLING 101

Discipleship Through Relationship

TIME: The precious commodity that is held tightly and closely guarded, but often wasted on things that have no eternal significance. Discipleship, done right, is a commitment of time. It is one believer in Christ committing and investing time into the life of another. Too often, the American version of discipling is another Bible Study or a 10 page fill-in-the-blank booklet of what it means to be a Christian. The final command that Jesus gave was to go and "make" disciples, not hope that osmosis will create fully matured believers. Jesus spent time, face to face, with His closest disciples. He got to know them, challenged them, held them accountable, loved them unconditionally. Should we not follow His example?

Discipling 101 is a simple, effective way to answer the call that is to all Christians, "go and make disciples". Please take time a few moments to listen to the inspring story of how one man was presented with a hard truth. Stephen S. "Bud" McGinnis was a leader in his home church but had never personally, intentionally, discipled anyone in the Chrisitan faith. It convicted and challenged him to do something about it and his life has never been the same. Through his Man to Man Ministry thousands are being taught in the faith, one to one, face to face.

Using a simple format, with minimal materials, Bud set out on a mission to teach men how to be devoted followers of Christ. He commits himself, and a bit of his time to them, in return he demands the same from them. Faint of heart need not apply, this is a call to take your faith seriously and grow into maturity.

    Call to Action

Search, first in your own heart and then for those that have a serious desire to grow in their faith. Are you ready to step out in faith? The answer is in your heart and the Holy Spirit wants to guide you along the way. Many feel they need to know more but, in reality, we already know way more than what we are doing. Faith comes by doing, and by doing discipleship we grow tremendously ourselves. Search your heart, determine to take that step of faith, and seek someone that is ready to walk with you in the adventure of discipleship.

    Call to Disciple

Stay at it! Persist, commit the time, do not cut corners. The spiritual life of a brother or sister in Christ is worth your time. One hour, one day a week, for 12 weeks. Can you commit that much to walk with another believer as you both grow in your relationship to Christ? Meetings can be in the morning at the local coffee shop, over lunch, or even your own living room, whatever works for you. Your time says "I care", and people don't care what you know until they know you care. Make the commitment, stay at it, and it will gain eternal benefit.

    Call to Multiply

Discipling is not meant to be a one-time event. It is meant to expand in two ways. First, by multiplication. That happens when the one you mentor does the same thing with someone else. A large part of what you are doing is preparing another to repeat the process. Second, find that next follower of Christ that you can help along the way. One-on-one, face-to-face discipling will change your life, your family, your church, and the world. Multiplicaton by duplication, that's what Jesus did and that's what we are called to do.
